Kidney Stone Removal - PCNL
PCNL (percutaneous nephrolithotomy) is a surgical procedure used to remove large kidney stones that cannot be treated with other methods, such as shock wave lithotripsy or ureteroscopy. Stones are usually in the kidney or upper ureter.
During PCNL, a small incision is made in the back, and a hollow tube is inserted through the incision and into the kidney. A scope is then passed through the tube, allowing the surgeon to locate and remove the kidney stone.
The surgeon may use specialized instruments, such as lasers or ultrasound, to break up the stone into smaller pieces, which are then removed through the scope or with a special tool.
After the surgery, patients may need to stay in the hospital for a few days, and may need to use a urinary catheter to drain urine from the bladder. Pain medication may also be needed to manage discomfort.
Complications from PCNL kidney stone removal surgery are rare, but can include bleeding, infection, and damage to the kidney or other nearby organs. It is important to discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure with our doctor before undergoing PCNL kidney stone removal surgery.
